My friend Jenny stopped by the house yesterday with a box full of cupcakes. She had some new holiday flavors and needed some shots of them for her website and I was glad to oblige

We started with the boring product shots and once those were in the can, we set off to take some more creative, Christmas-themed shots to be used for her marketing materials. I was even able to coax The Marketing Queen to leave her den to help us brainstorm some ideas and set up some shots.

The finished holiday postcard

After Jenny packed up and left, we got to sample some of the goods. As T was finishing off one of the gingerbread cupcakes she said to me “You know, this is the only frosting I’ve ever had that compares to my mom’s”. High praise indeed. If you need some affordable treats for your next get together, give Perfect Serendipity a call!

Black Friday – the day everyone goes shopping and retail stores turn a profit. We decided to buck tradition and pile the family in the car and make the 90 minute trip to one of my favorite places – Rocky Mountain National Park!

We arrived at Sprague Lake at about 8AM. As expected, the lake was a frozen block of ice. Because the temperature was in the low 30′s however, the skies were as clear as I had ever seen them. I spent a lot of time trying to capture the streaks of light the sun was creating as it was peaking through the over-hanging branches of the resident pine trees.

Our next stop was Bear Lake. The trail to get to the lake was ice packed snow so it made the short walk more harrowing than need be, but as always, Hallets Peak didn’t disappoint.

Our last stop at the park was along Trail Ridge Road, at the overlook of Upper Beaver Meadow. It was here that we found the Steller’s Jay and his regal headdress. I put the big hardware on the camera and was able to snap off several shots of this elegant bird has he flew from branch to branch looking for some breakfast.

Our journey nearly complete, we had one more stop – Le Peep in Longmont. I’ve already waxed eloquent about the food there. Suffice it to say it didn’t disaapoint. It all added up to a great Black Friday for the entire family.

I had a small pie with pesto, mushrooms, tomato and roasted garlic. It was good tasting but the sauce was a little oily so it dripped on me a lot. I also had a 1554 draft which was dark and very good.

Johnny had a dish of meat (it was called a skillet or something nicer) but basically it was a skillet with pepperoni, sausage, ham, salami, sauce and cheese. He liked it a lot!

It was good and affordable, our two meals, a beer and a soda were about $30 with tip. I am not sure that I would put it on a list to take people to, but it was definitely not a bad meal.

I had a garlic pretzel appetizer that was wonderful, Johnny had steak chili which was very good. For dinner I had the ahi tuna appetizer (a little bland) and John had some kind of enchilada thing with purple tortillas that he liked A LOT.

I had a Stout beer that was not even on the menu (Tiny’s Stout) that was chocolate luscious and also tried the Gila Pale Ale which I will definitely have another time (it was very hoppy tasting brew which I love). Johnny had a couple of the non-alcoholic drinks that he enjoyed very much.

Rock Bottom is located in Westminister, Colorado (between Denver and Boulder). This one is definitely on the list for when guests come to visit!

The Black Forest Restaurant is the first place that my husband and I ate when traveling to Colorado, scouting places to move to. It is up Boulder Canyon Road in the town of Nederland at what feels like the top of the world!

The night that we were there it was cold and rainy, but it was warm inside! This restaurant is reminiscent of old world Europe with high timbers and semi-formal wait staff. The decor is a little dated but clean and VERY good service.

John had the Elk Steaks which were pretty good. Different tasting to a Floridian and the portion was somewhat small. I had the Rainbow Trout which was VERY good, well cooked and moist. The dinner ranged from $18 to $36 for the elk. A plain dinner salad was included with the dinner, as was bread.

I would go back with my relatives that like the old world cooking (my father was raised on Pennsylvania Dutch style cooking and my Grandfather would have LOVED the menu).
