Peak to Peak Highway

by jake2624 on February 1, 2009

This Sunday Tara and I got up early and went for a leisurely drive. We ended up driving over 100 miles through the foothills between Golden and Estes Park. The highlight for us was the Peak-to-Peak highway. The scenic views were pretty amazing.

One thing we noticed immediately was a cloud formation that seemed to remain stationary over the mountains off in the distance. This is a weather phenomenon that is common to the area. The mountains create a barrier (often called a Mountain Barrier – doh!). On the windward side of the mountain, the winds hit the mountain barrier and are pushed up into the atmosphere where the wind interacts with the moisture and create clouds. Whatever it is, it’s pretty cool looking!

After driving around, we stopped and had some pizza. Yummy. Time to take a nap to get ready for the Super Bowl!
